Asking questions at the end of an interview

“Do you have any questions for me?” is your turn to interview them. Good questions show you read the posting and listened in the interview, and the answers tell you things the posting can’t: how the team works, what the role really needs, and whether you’d want the job.

The best question depends on who you’re asking. A recruiter can’t tell you how deploys work, and a peer usually can’t tell you where the team is headed next year.

  • Recruiter

Knows the process, the timeline, and the shape of the team. Ask what comes next and who you will meet.

Which rounds come next, and what does each one focus on for this role?

  • Hiring manager

Owns the role. Ask what success looks like, what the team is working on, and how work gets planned.

What would you want someone in this role to have shipped after six months?

  • Peer engineer

Lives with the code. Ask about the stack, reviews, deploys, on-call, and how engineers settle a disagreement.

What happens between a pull request opening and the change reaching production?

  • Skip-level

Sees further out. Ask where the team fits, how its goals are set, and how engineers grow into wider scope.

How does this team’s work connect to what the wider group is trying to do this year?
